A strategy session on February 5th, 2007: Asia Society, New York.

SonicRim is collaborating with Asia Society, New York Chapter of IDSA, The Confederation of Indian Industries, Microsoft and many other international organizations to plan a series of events around the world to ultimately help establish a think tank for inspiring people centered innovation in India and for integrating the creative talent and cultural resources of India with the global economy. More details about the forthcoming strategy session in New York can be found at www.designwithindia.com. If your company is interested in growing your business in India and in other emerging economies, you should definitely consider partnering with the “Design with India” initiative.
Globalization is forcing designers to rethink their role in the context of developing world economies, especially in Asia. India’s economic potential has long been attracting major international corporations. Recently, attention has shifted to include a greater focus on the immense spending power of India’s rural sector. As global economic partnerships continue to expand and design becomes the driving force behind innovation, so too does the potential for businesses and designers to successfully partner with India. But at what cost?
Designers can take inspiration from the traditions and craftsmanship that are unique to India. They can look to India to understand design innovation from a deeper, more resource driven perspective. However, it is important to interpret India’s identity and traditions from both a local and global perspective in order to simultaneously cultivate and preserve its rich and historic culture.
The IDSA/NYC, the Asia Society and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) are bringing together a key group of U.S. and Indian leaders from the international business, design, education and cultural institutions to participate in a real-time strategy session. The collective thinking power of this group will explore India’s cultural traditions, examine the economic potential of this extraordinary country and illuminate the challenges and opportunities facing design.

SonicRim Principal Uday Dandavate is one of the organizers and a speaker at the international conference “design with India” to be held in New Delhi, India on December 4th and 5th, 2006.
Design has a major role to play in continually exploring ways of preserving the cultural expression and experience around the world. While global businesses go about breaking down the walls and distances that separate us, designers have the opportunity to save the world from homogenization. This Design Summit is a platform for designers to work together with industry to make a better tomorrow.
The objective of the 6th edition of the CII-NID Design Summit is to address how the unique culture, behaviors and aspirations of people from India will influence the field of design and innovation in the future. This conference will help global audiences appreciate the opportunities and challenges of design and innovation with Indian companies, professionals and consumers.
The Design Summit is an annual platform for promoting design in industry organized by the CII and the NID, with support from the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The summit aims to bring together eminent scholars, practitioners, educators and users from the areas of design and innovation so the development of indigenous designs and innovations in the country can gain momentum.
This year’s theme, Design with India, will showcase India’s strength in design and reflect stellar examples of work being done around the world. The summit will provide a window to new ideas and best practices with an aim to strengthen the global design scenario.
Uday will be moderating “The Design Element” session during the Elements of Change - IDSA National Conference in Austin, TX, September 17-20.
from design perspectives 6.06 Change is the only constant. As physical design changes so must the thinking behind each design. We must anticipate what’s coming and orient our thinking based on an ever-evolving world stage. Come compare notes with some of the most forward-thinking design minds and learn where the future opportunities lie, and the type of thinking that will be required to navigate through to success.
Uday Dandavate conducted a workshop and presented at In Between: Crossing the Borders of Design, the 2006 IDSA Western District Conference at Arizona State University held April 7-8. To read more about the conference, SonicRim’s workshop and Uday’s presentation, check out these links:
